aceshighapps.com enjoyed an exclusive sneak preview of the ‘Colditz Cock’ during a recent visit to Colditz Castle. The “Flugwelt” museum at Altenburg-Nobitz airport is currently nearing the end of a three-year project to build a full-scale replica of the Glider originally designed by Colditz prisoners, ‘Bill’ Goldfinch and Tony Rolt.

The construction of the original glider, made from bed boards and cotton covers, started during 1944, with a plan to launch the glider at night and land on the meadows on the far bank of the river Mulde. Goldfinch and Rolt were joined by Jack Best, better known for being one of the Colditz ‘Ghosts’, and Dick Howe in this incredible undertaking. The glider was completed in early 1945, but the impending end of the war meant it could never undertake its maiden voyage. After the war the glider disappeared, presumably used for firewood by local residents.

The dedicated team at “Flugwelt” are now looking forward to the day the glider takes to the sky over Germany. Sticking faithfully to the original design of the glider, but also incorporating modern safety features to protect the two passengers it will carry, the glider will be launched at Altenburg-Nobitz airport, before moving to its spiritual home at the castle. The Colditz Society then intends to display the glider in the original attic where it was built! A second smaller glider will also be placed in the arrivals hall of the airport, which is currently served by Ryanair.

The prisoner of war camp at Colditz Castle was used to keep Allied air force prisoners who had escaped from and become troublesome at other camps. The castle was thought of as escape-proof due to its position, high walls and moat. Conditions were generally good for the prisoners in comparison with other camps, with a chapel, workshop and even a theatre. However, this didn't quell the desire to escape!

In the app we will follow the breathtaking escapes of over 30 prisoners. We will also invite you to visit Colditz museum for yourself and stay over at the castle!
